Google Gemini Certificate
AI Exploration Unit
Short Title: Google Certification for Students
Description: The Google Gemini Certification for students is an official online course created by Google to teach students how to responsibly and ethically use AI, more specifically, Gemini. The topics that were covered were prompting, ethical use of AI regarding issues, namely data privacy and critically thinking about AI content, productivity, and using AI for tasks such as research, writing, and organization.
Discussion: Personally, I had to complete this certification for my digital arts class in school. This certification helped me learn how to effectively and responsibly utilize AI tools in school for academic purposes and to help me further develop my own thinking. It helped me understand how to brainstorm, organize, and refine my ideas to ensure that I can work alongside AI in the future. Furthermore, it changed how I view AI. One particular instance where I recognized this was during my preparation for my term two math cumulative exam. In the past, I would be stuck on a problem and directly look up the answers to try and work my way backwards. However, after completing the certification, I decided to do things differently and upload a photo of the practice worksheets and ask Gemini to act as my tutor by pointing out the specific step that I completed incorrectly. It also helped me create practice tests based on my notes and questions.
Short Title: Robotaxis (Self-Driving Taxis)
Description: A robotaxi is a vehicle that is self-driving and uses AI to transport passengers without the need for a human driver. There are various companies, like Tesla and Waymo, developing a robotaxi service that implements such artificial intelligence systems that can detect the surroundings of a vehicle and make decisions to drive safely on the roads.
Discussion: From my perspective, robotaxis demonstrate the extent to which AI has advanced and how capable it is in transforming our everyday lives. The thought of getting into a car without a human driver makes me feel slightly uneasy because it would require me to truly believe in AI, especially in terms of my personal safety, which I currently do not have. If robotaxis become more prevalent and common, I believe they could make transportation much more convenient and possibly prevent human error-induced accidents. However, I also see some potential issues that should be addressed before robotaxis are fully integrated into society, such as how this would impact the current drivers’ employment and what would happen if the AI makes a mistake.
Short Title: Using AI to Shop with Walmart and OpenAI
Description: This partnership between Walmart and OpenAI allows customers to directly make purchases through ChatGPT by conversing with AI. This eliminates the need for customers to browse through websites as they can simply ask the AI assistant for products, make comparisons and payments through features like “Instant Checkout”.
Discussion: From my point of view, this partnership shows us the impact of AI on everyday activities such as shopping. The function of asking AI what to purchase, for instance, and have it handle all the tasks, seems really convenient, especially for things like groceries. Nevertheless, I also believe it has the potential to make individuals too reliant on AI-made decisions, instead of choosing what to buy for themselves. I think that there is also the concern that AI could make the wrong recommendation or misunderstand what the user wants.
Short Title: Xiaomi Miloco Smart Home AI
Description: Xiaomi Local Copilot, or Xiaomi Miloco, is an AI system that was created to control smart homes. It understands voice commands and detects user behaviour by using advanced AI technology. It can also control smart devices such as lights, temperature, and appliances. Unlike other smart home systems, Miloco is able to make decisions on its own depending on the context.
Discussion: In my opinion, the Xiaomi Miloco is quite interesting as it proves how AI can manage our lives in the status quo. Having a home that will automatically turn the lights on and off, play music, or clean depending on your actions is a compelling idea to me. However, I personally think that there may be an issue of privacy, especially since the AI will presumably use cameras and user-specific data to understand what the user is doing. In my view, this kind of AI technology could strongly benefit people’s lives, particularly in regard to efficiency and comfort, but being able to trust technology to such a personal extent can be difficult.
Short Title: AI Personalized Learning for Students
Description: The education platform Pearson added AI to help students create personal learning experiences by adapting according to their learning pace and comprehension.
Discussion: I think this AI could be very useful because it adjusts according to each student’s preferences and needs instead of using the same pace for everyone. It could be useful in making learning easier, especially for those requiring additional support, but it also depends on how well this artificial intelligence understands what each student needs.
Short Title: Food Delivery Using AI Drones
Description: Meituan is a technology company from China that uses AI drones for delivering food and other necessities. The drones, which rely on computer vision, use navigation algorithms that ensure the drones reach their destinations. The drones can travel over a few kilometers and reduce the delivery time significantly, usually taking a maximum of 15 minutes.
Discussion: Personally, I had previously watched TikTok videos of the Meituan drones delivering food to customers on the Great Wall of China. I think it is amazing how fast and convenient these drones are, especially when it pertains to locations that are difficult to access by foot or by car. Nonetheless, it raises concerns regarding safety (flying objects over people) due to potential drone malfunctions, privacy (the abundance of cameras and sensors for navigation), and how it affects delivery jobs in the status quo.
Short Title: Using AI to Farm Smartly
Description: Bayer’s Climate FieldView is a digital farming platform that uses AI and data analytics to monitor crops, soil, and weather conditions. This allows it to improve crop yields and efficient farming methods.
Discussion: In my opinion, this shows how AI is being used in areas people don’t always think about, like agriculture. It can be used to help farmers make better decisions and increase food production. However, it all depends on whether one has access to this AI technology, which not all farmers may have.
Short Title: AI Hotel Service Robots
Description: Hotel delivery robots are AI robots designed for the delivery of goods such as food, packages, or toiletries directly to hotel rooms. These robots operate using navigation systems, sensors, and building maps, therefore moving around the hotel corridors and elevators completely independently. In some hotels, these robots can be connected with an AI front desk system or assistant, thus automating the requests of guests.
Discussion: During my trip to Shanghai during spring break, I stayed in a hotel whose front desk utilized a delivery robot to deliver goods directly to my hotel room. In fact, the robot transported my food and package delivery extremely quickly. The use of AI was quite efficient, especially due to the fact that I did not have to walk all the way to the lobby to collect my items. However, I think the AI assistant and delivery robot resulted in a lack of human interaction with the staff, which seemed a bit dystopian, in a more futuristic sense.
Short Title: AI in Cybersecurity
Description: The Watsonx, developed by IBM, uses AI to detect and respond to threats in the field of cybersecurity. It has the ability to analyze large amounts of data, recognize unusual activity, and help prevent cyber attacks in an efficient manner.
Discussion: This, I believe, demonstrates the importance of AI in protecting the security of digital information. With so much of our information being stored in virtual spaces, the use of AI can prevent major issues. In contrast, it also shows that cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated, thus the need for advanced AI tools to protect our data.
Short Title: AI Smart Glasses
Description: Meta partnered with Ray-Ban to develop smart glasses. The smart glasses feature AI technologies such as voice commands, photo and video capture, and real-time assistance that allows it to connect to an AI assistant to answer questions or interact with the surroundings.
Discussion: From my perspective, the smart glasses are intriguing because they are incorporating AI into something people wear on a daily basis. Being able to take photos or ask questions hands-free seems very convenient. Personally, I have seen multiple influencers conduct interviews using these glasses. However, I think they could pose a threat to privacy as people can be recorded without their knowledge.
Short Title: AI Health Tracking Ring
Description: The Oura Ring is a smart ring that uses AI technology to monitor and track sleep, heart rate, and activity. The device then analyzes the data collected and offers the user insights into their health.
Discussion: From my view, the Oura Ring is useful because it helps one understand their health better through data. It could improve sleep habits through the use of a fashionable and comfortable design.
Short Title: The Discontinuation of Generative Video
Description: On March 24, 2026, OpenAI announced that it was officially shutting down a text-to-video generation model, Sora. Although it is a revolutionary technology, the company has chosen to shut it down because of the enormous environmental cost and the legal issues regarding its usage of copyrighted information for its training.
Discussion: I often assume that technology will just keep growing and improving forever, but it’s reassuring to see that sustainability and ethics matter in AI. For me, it’s a relief to know that a company is prioritizing the quality of the internet over impressive but potentially harmful tools. It’s also relevant to our digital arts class because it shows me that human-made videos have a value that cannot be replaced by AI just for efficiency.
Short Title: The First AI Prescriptor
Description: Utah has become the first state in America that allows an AI system to autonomously prescribe low-risk medication without a human doctor’s signature. The system is called Doctronic, and it prescribes medication based on a patient’s medical history and their current symptoms.
Discussion: In my opinion, this is a tool that will exponentially increase efficiency, however it is slightly scary to me, because if an AI system prescribes the wrong medication, who do you hold accountable for it? It might be great for people living in rural areas where they cannot get a doctor’s appointment easily, but I think we should have human medical professionals participating occasionally.
Short Title: AI Lab Researcher
Description: Sakana AI has recently announced “The AI Scientist”, which is the first complete system for fully automated scientific research. It is able to look at existing research, develop a new hypothesis, design an experiment, execute code to test it, and write a complete paper on the results of the experiment without the help of a human.
Discussion: While humans spend days performing experiments by hand, this AI can perform thousands of experiments in minutes. I believe that it is a great idea that can potentially lead to cures for diseases sooner.
Short Title: AI Hallucinates Information Regarding Indigenous Cultures
Description: According to a March report, there is a major ethical issue facing AI regarding hallucinations or fake stories and traditions regarding the history of Indigenous nations. As these cultures are not well represented in the data used to train these AI systems, these systems are essentially combining the history of these nations together to create inaccurate and offensive “pan-Indigenous” content.
Discussion: As a resident of BC, I have been encouraged to respect and protect the history of the Indigenous peoples since elementary school. I believe that this is a serious issue and it shows how AI can spread misinformation if not properly trained on accurate and diverse data.
Short Title: The Risk of Synthetic Data Collapse
Description: Researchers from the University of Toronto and Oxford have gone on to say that training new models on data produced by old models, rather than on human-generated data, causes “Model Collapse” because it causes the AI system to forget rare information. This leads to repetitive, low-quality, or illogical outputs.
Discussion: I think that this is a warning to our generation because many people use AI in their daily lives, whether in work or school, it is becoming increasingly difficult to contribute new, original, and creative ideas to society. It is scary to think that eventually, the AI system will have nothing real to learn from, and will begin to deteriorate if we do not increase our output of human productions.
Short Title: AI Tutor Assistant
Description: Khanmigo is an AI tutor designed by Khan Academy that helps students in their learning by guiding them through problems instead of directly answering for them as a standard chatbot would. It uses a version of GPT-4 to guide students through complex subjects like math and writing by asking leading questions, identifying specific logical errors, and overall encouraging the students to find the solution themselves.
Discussion: In my opinion, the above is a good use of ethical AI in education because it assists students in their learning rather than doing the work for them. This preserves the necessary struggle to actually learn. It’s tempting to just want the answer to an equation, but that doesn’t help me during an exam. Furthermore, I believe that Khanmigo will help prevent academic dishonesty because this AI is designed in a way that stops students from cheating through a class.
Short Title: AI Research Assistant
Description: NotebookLM is an AI tool provided by Google to help users summarize long documents, organize notes, create study guides and generate insights and videos based on the uploaded sources. It specializes in research and note-taking – unlike traditional chatbots that pull information from the entire internet, NotebookLM only uses the specific documents that a user uploads as its knowledge base.
Discussion: From my perspective, NotebookLM is beneficial for studying as it is well-organized. Instead of manually searching through my messy notes, I can upload everything to NotebookLM, ask a question and be given the answer with a direct citation to the provided material. I personally like this tool because it solves the problem with AI hallucinating. Therefore, it seems more reliable since it solely pulls information from my uploaded documents rather than the entire internet.
Short Title: AI for Accessibility
Description: Be My AI, which is part of Be My Eyes, is an app that uses artificial intelligence to describe surroundings and objects for visually impaired individuals.
Discussion: I believe one of the most significant and meaningful applications of AI is this one, as it helps people become independent. I think that the app is extremely convenient – with a single picture taken from your phone camera, you can secure instant, accurate visual descriptions. It shows how AI can be used to enhance someone’s quality of life.
Short Title: AI Presentation Maker
Description: Gamma AI is an AI tool that creates presentations, documents, and web pages automatically from prompts.
Discussion: Personally, I think it is useful for saving time when creating presentations of school and work, especially for people who are not innately artistic. I often have great ideas but struggle to make them look visually appealing on a screen, so I think Gamma AI will help me resolve this issue. This way, I can focus entirely on the narrative and data, while allowing the AI to handle the aesthetic side.
