AI Exploration Unit

Google gemini is the generative ai developed by google, used in the google search engine to help pinpoint and synthesise specific, desired information, as well as to assist with mathematical calculations and and more in the full ai version (this is the search engine). It’s main objective is to provide the viewer for a short synopsis of the information they are looking for.

Google gemini and the ai used in the google search engine has been incredibly essential in my life, as well as many others. WIthout the resource of google and the internet, researching for assignments, double checking homework questions, looking for places to eat and finding things on a daily basis would be nowhere near as accessible. The google ai helps pinpoint exactly what I’m looking for out of a sea of information on the web, shortening my time having to look for it. Moreover, gemini synthesises the information so I don’t have to read paragraphs of text, and provides the source so I can fact check the information it gives me. Finally, the use of gemini in the search engine allows google to answer more complex and specific questions I have that the internet does not explicitly have an answer for yet. It makes my life easier and allows me to ask more developed questions to enhance my learning.

The spotify DJ is an ai programmed to recommend songs based off of your recent song additions as well as to curate custom playlists based on your song preferences. It allows you to discover new music automatically without having to search for it, as well as making custom playlists in your preferred genre of song so that you don’t have to make your own.

Often, I get tired of listening to the same songs all over again, and so I go to a custom playlist curated by the spotify dj, because it accurately generates songs that I will listen to and for some, i actually really end up liking them. This way, i don’t have to spend time looking for new music to listen to. Additionally, if i need a playlist for a specific event generated quickly, I can get the DJ to generate one and I’ll know that the songs will generally match the vibe I’m looking for. The spotify dj and the custom playlists are incredibly helpful to help me focus while I’m working, and is efficient in my busy schedule.

Chinese Kung-Fu Robots

Recently, UniTree Robotics has developed a humanoid robot that integrates ai into its code, making it able to perform kung fu and acrobatics without falling over. (In the video, you can see the robots actively adjusting their feet and weight so that they remain balanced, with even one kid bumping into the robot.) In the 2026 Spring Festival gala, their abilities were showcased when they did kung fu performances, effortlessly wielding weapons such as spears, nunchucks and more, while also being able to engage in hand to hand combat.

Seeing this feat is actually quite impressive, however, it is also incredibly daunting. Both the impressive and scary thing is that these non-organic, humanoid creations are able to perform the same things as we can, and perhaps execute them more effectively as well. If these robots become factory produced and undergo more training (most likely ai) then soon, we will see these robots in war. Considering that this brand is chinese, we won’t be waiting too long for another war with china to begin. However, this means that in addition to China’s large population, they will also have killer robots, who won’t have nay physical disadvantages and won’t hesitate to kill targets and even civilians. This brings up many ethical concerns, such as if intelligent robots should even be allowed in combat and what regulations surround their management if allowed. Moreover, china and india seem to be the only countries with this type of technology, leaving other major nations at a disadvantage.

NVIDIA is the company that provides others with the essential technology (Hardware, software, systems and ecosystem) required to make and run generative ai, such as GPUs. What is so crucial to this companies’ success is their ability to not just deliver effective hardware but also provide systems for the ai to improve with as well as software to help maintain ai. In short, they’re the main company that provides technology for ai usage internationally (although they also provide some other non ai things). They’ve been so successful recently that is said that they passed both apple and microsoft in its market cap, going to show how prominent ai is in our society and important ai is going to be in our future.

NVIDIA is the company that is currently supplying major platforms such as google, microsoft, apple, openai, Amazon, samsung and Meta with essential ai technology. Without NVIDIA, progress in ai would be significantly lowered, and perhaps, things like google gemini and chatgpt wouldn’t be existent right now. If genai such as these weren’t here that would affect education and writing worldwide. For example, in WPGA, perhaps we’d still be allowed to do most of our work online because there wouldn’t be a fear of us using ai to write our work. Or perhaps our grading would then actually be fair, as there is no ai to influence our work. However, it would also make our lives harder. For example, if i needed to ask a very specific question, I would rely on gemini to respond because they can create useful answers. If there was just a search engine and I asked a specific question, google wouldn’t give me a response, but only bring up relevant sources, which forces to me to look further, whereas the gemini synthesis does it for you, which i first found weird, but now value.

Trump orders government to stop using Anthropic in battle over AI use

This was an article written by the BBC on the conflict between the ai company Anthropic and the us government on the permittance and usage of ai resources in battle. This was written to inform readers about the current status on the situation.

This is especially significant because anthropic is a us based ai company, which makes it ironic considering that the us government is asking for access to it. I believe that it is completely fair for Anthropic to refuse dropping ai safeguards and access to potentially dangerous tools such as Claude, which may be used for mass surveillance and autonomous ai weapons. Weapons such as these in war are extremely dangerous, as they will be made to follow orders immediately without considering the value of man or woman or children. They will not prioritise the safety of innocents unless told to do so, but even then, the risk is still present. Ai weaponry is simply robotic, with no empathetic human controlling it. It is essential that this kind of weaponry gains some regulations regarding its use, with on being that it is forbidden from the use of the government (especially the us). The fact that the government is now lying and criticising a company from its own nation is extremely concerning, displaying just how immature the Pentagon and the us government is. “Yet, Trump berated the company on his Truth Social platform, saying Anthropic “better get their act together, and be helpful during this phase out period, or I will use the Full Power of the Presidency to make them comply, with major civil and criminal consequences to follow””. I believe that safeguards around ai use must be upheld, no matter who has access to it.

When should companies alert police? What the Tumbler Ridge Tragedy reveals about regulating AI

This was an article written following the tumbler ridge shooting and the discovery of chatgpt being used in the process. The shooter was found searching disturbing prompts on the chatbot which resulted in her getting banned, but she was able to create a second unbanned account. The discussion is over why chatgpt did not report these searches to the authorities, and when an ai should if regulations are not present?

Canada currently does not have specific regulations regarding ai, which I already believe is a problem. With ai development on the rise and more and more ethical borders becoming involved, it is essential that the UN create a new committee based on creating a universal, regulatory framework regarding nations’ use of ai. On another note, i think that this article brings up a very concerning problem within our world. I’m wondering why the ai did not report these disturbing prompts earlier, however I think this goes to show how ai, despite undergoing training and “thinking for itself” hesitates when making actual decisions on its own, especially when regarding a major issue. Thus, ai, though generative and adaptive, is still a robot at its core, focusing on following code and not thinking for itself. Overall, this whole situation was incredibly tragic, and I hope to never see it happen again in BC.

AI Is One of the Least-Liked Things in America, According to New NBC Poll

This was an article written by CNET on NBC’s recent poll on ai favouritism in the United States. According to this article, ai is ranked lower than ICE, Donald Trump and the Republican party, and Pope Leo XIV, and is ranked higher than Iran and the Democratic Party.

Upon reading this article, I had a few questions in mind. One, why did this form have a ranking for ai and all these other somewhat unrelated topics? Two, there is no evidence that this was the actual results of the form, as the article never explicitly shows or quotes data from this experiment. Moreover, I highly doubt that citizens of the US do not like ai, considering all the resources with google, chatgpt, and all the other everyday-use apps that integrate ai. Whats more is that ai is ranked lower than ICE, which i highly doubt. And going upon last year’s election, the nation was essentially split between the republican and democratic party in terms of votes, proving that the republican party isn’t “more” favoured by citizens. I’m starting to question the audience that this form was given to, and if it was equally distributed. This data is untrue, this article is biased, and there are is no evidence to prove their point.

AI model flags hidden breast cancers years before diagnosis in routine mammograms

This was an article written by Medical news about how ai was able to identify clues of developing breast cancer years before diagnosis or symptoms appearing.

This article discusses how a study involving four different ai algorithms targeting finding clues of interval cancers found that some could actually identify subtle patterns in a patient that was about to develop cancer that humans would overlook. THis is possible through the millions of mammography scan images that the ai is run through in its algorithm, which allows it to identify very small differences in between the images with cancer and no cancer, or patients about to develop it. I believe that this is an incredibly useful tool, able to diagnose patients and alert them well before symptoms appear. This way, patients are able to prepare and treat the cancer early, significantly reducing mortality rates and increasing the chance for survival. As this technology keeps developing, soon doctors will be able to put this technology to use in clinics and hospitals, where, if the accuracy rates increase, will be extremely effective.

Waymo cars are the first cars to provide customers with a self driving, ai powered driving service that never gets tired or drunk. This service allows for people, in any state, to get safe transportation without any fear of crashing (having to drive while drunk) or for those who don’t know how to drive yet, or for those who need to get to the airport quickly ( but don’t want to bring their cars). The addition of ai-drivers provides safety from any assaults or manipulation the driver might inflict upon the passenger, and it also saves money for Waymo because they won’t have to hire more workers.

While I believe that the idea is cool, (and though I have yet to try driving in a waymo car), I still do not completely trust this service. On their website, they say that their ai has gone through billions of simulations and is prepared for every situation. However, ai can still make errors and moreover, anything could happen in real life that the ai could not be prepared for. And in that situation, many people are going to get hurt. Moreover, one time someone had tesla self drive on the highway while they fell asleep, and they actually got pulled over for going too fast. I don’t think waymo cars have been tested on the highway yet, so it is even more risky to take a waymo for long distance transportation. Once I see some data and reliable statistics about the company, I would like to try it.

Siri (developed by Apple) is an ai powered virtual assistant (available on all apple devices), able to provide users with almost any task on command, such as setting timers and reminders, sending messages, checking the weather, answering, and undergoing online searches. Siri follows ai algorithms and machine learning in order to understand and process what the user is saying to it.

Siri is an incredibly useful tool, acting as a digital navigator on my phone and being able to easily perform tasks for me, especially if need to multitask. For example, if my dad is driving, he only uses voice commands for siri and text messages to perform tasks on his phone. Without siri, he would have to stop on the side of the road or risk getting into a car accident (going on your phone while driving is against the law, too). I use it if i need to save as much time as possible and am working on homework. If i need to text an important message or need to quickly set a reminder, i use siri. If I am unsure where a feature is on my phone, I know that siri will be there to answer my question. Overall, siri is a versatile, digital tool that helps me accomplish everyday tasks with minimal effort.

The grammarly ai is designed to spot grammatical errors as well as ways to make your writing more concise, assertive, relevant to your audience, and more. The ai is able to actively analyze your text and offer new ways to improve your writing on the spot.

While I don’t use grammarly (I want to develop my skill of finding these improvements myself.) I have many classmates who do, and their writing becomes better. While this is a very helpful tool, I don’t find that it should be allowed in graded writing assignments, because there is a generative ai involved in writing certain segments of your text for you (if you accept the correction) so i think there should be some ethics/regulations involved with students using this. It’s understandable to use for work, however, in graded assignments, i don’t think it should be allowed. I’m wondering if any teachers have considered this or if they haven’t thought about it. Finally, the auto correct and spelling check is a lifesaver. Without this feature, I would not be able to type up and edit my writing as quickly, and i would not be able to spell complicated words as easily.

Eddie (Duke of Edinburgh Gem)

A custom Gem (on gemini) that acts as a mentor and experienced person to answer any questions regarding the Duke of Ed award. This was developed by Mr. Korol to help students answer questions when he isn’t available or for when they have questions he doesn’t know how to answer them.

Duke of ed lasts for a long time, with each level including different, specific requirements and special rules. It can get confusing at times, even with all the resources available and especially when you’re unsure of what to do. And so, the best option is to ask mr.korol or mr.lee for school specific questions, however they’re not always around. And so, this gemini gem, which basically acts as another duke of ed expert alongside the two, provides students with a 24/7 service, giving automatic responses to save time (instead of waiting for an email back or having to look for teachers at school). And while this gem may not be fully reliable, this service is incredibly useful for efficient, accurate answers. This efficiency is especially relevant ot duke of ed, as people want to use all the time they can take to complete it.

The AI on google maps helps actively reroute routes, find the fastest routes, and predict the eta based on time of day, traffic, accidents reported, etc. This provides automatic route changes for the driver, who can’t always spare time looking down at their phone in order to find a different route. With that being said, this feature also reduces the risk of a car accident or worse, with the person being able to voice control (in collaboration with siri) to finalise new directions.

While driving, this automatic rerouting feature is incredibly useful in the fact that you don’t have to stop and do it manually, with it happening while you are driving. This saves a lot of time, especially when there’s a lot of traffic and you’re unsure of where to go, the ai will know exactly what to do. Moreover, if you’re not sure when you’re getting to a location, you won’t need to calculate it yourself. The ai helps consider factors such as accidents, traffic, and weather conditions to help get your eta automatically. This again, helps drivers drive safely without having to worry about getting into accidents or getting ticketed. Especially with voice command, the things you want to change gets even easier.

iMessages (Genmoji)

Apple’s Genmoji on iMessages is used to create new and unique emojis for texting use.

There are times where even apple’s emoji catalogue does not have the emoji that I want to text. For example, before the recent updates, there was no bubble tea emoji! And currently, there is no capybara emoji! So when Genmoji came out, I used it to generate an emoji style emoji of a capybara to use, and it actually turned out pretty well! This way, i still get an emoji to use, and I can even specify it to my desires. Moreover, you can combine existing emojis ot create an emoji with both aspects of the two. I like the flexibility and the way we can create thousands of our own emojis without having to wait a whole ‘nother year for apple to release new emojis and such.

Duolingo (Live Video Call)

This live video call feature is a type of lesson offered by Duolingo Max to help learners practice their speaking and conversational skills in French with an “actual” person instead of doing practice questions. Here, they are able to put their skills into practice in preparation for the real world. (Lily, the character you’re talking to, is ai generated) Lily responds like a normal person and asks questions based on what you’ve said before.

This resource allowed me to practice my conversational skills with someone, even when there was no one else around. I think the most beneficial feature of the ai video call was the fact that Lily could respond intelligently to my questions and what i said earlier, enriching the conversation and prompting me to think harder about what i say next. This really develops your socials skills as well, thinking on the spot while speaking comprehensively and clearly. It is a very difficult but rewarding brain exercise, something that other programs cannot recreate.

The AI algorithm in pinterest (and many other social media platforms) is used to identify pins that you are interested in and then offer more pins that are related to the ones you’ve saved to creat a personalized home page or feed. This gives the viewer more ideas to save and new content to follow. \

This AI algorithm is actually quite useful, providing me with new pins and ideas for life without having to search for more. Additionally, the fact that they’re related to what I’m interested in helps in growing my interest in the subject or learning more about it. For example, if i saved several food recipes, then the next time I check my home page, more food recipes (similar to the ones i’ve saved previous) should appear. Or, if I was looking for room inspiration, then the algorithm would show different styles of room inspiration the next time i refresh the homepage. It gives me different ideas to work ith and choose from, and for me to build off them as well.

The Google gemini certification was a course and test developed by google for teens and adults to learn more about ai and gemini and how to use it responsibly.

This course allowed me to learn how to navigate google gemini easier as well as learn about all the unique resources that gemini offers. I learned about specific tools such as NotebookLM (to write out your thoughts) and custom GEMs that act as mentors with experience in a particular field. Additionally, I was tested on how ot use ai responsibly and when not to. I can use ai to help me brainstorm for ideas, but I should write the actual assignment myself. When I took the test, I got a passing score of 91/95. I think this course was quite beneficial for my future use of ai.

i facial recognition with google nest trains the ai on the security camera to recognize familiar faces, such as your family and friends.

This prepares it so when it doesn’t recognize a face, it can alert you to tell you that someone unfamiliar is entering your home or getting near it. This is especially useful when you’re out of town and get a notification that someone is coming, but are not sure who it is. This way, you don’t have to go in and check the security camera to check who it is, with instead just receiving a notification. Moreover, you will be able to interact with them by speaking through the camera, allowing you to confirm their identity or to ask what their purpose is doing there.

This article discusses the ethical lines around using ai as a tool to help create art. People believe that ai should not be used in the process of creating art, because it’s simply too easy to tell ai to create the piece for you. Artists say they are concerned about ai taking away “the traditional part of art” away from them. And while some artists use different online programs and technologies to help in their art process, such as digital art, for any other scenario, they draw on paper. Personally, i agree with the artists. As someone who enjoys art, one of the best parts about admiring it is knowing that another human was able to think of this and paint it by themselves. If ai takes over art, then no matter how good the piece is, the value of art and the meaning behind it will be stripped away. Art will not be as enjoyable to look at anymore, because we know that it wasn’t created by us, but by a robot.

Hudl is a platform used by athletes to create highlight reels, review their play, and identify how to improve. The ai portion of Hudl uses an ai algorithm to pull the “best” plays from your game and turn it into a highlight reel (you can also do this manually). Moreover, the ai can be used to do other things, such as tracking the ball in a play and providing player stats. This provides the player with instant results, lessening the time required to manually find each good/bad play, or specific action done in the play. Moreover, an instant stats sheet lessens the time needed to manually track every single thing down, with the ai doing it automatically.

I use hudl and a similar platform, called balltime, to help me construct my own highlight videos for volleyball. The ai is incredibly useful, able to help me point out where I am on the court with a red circle around me, as well as identifying which plays were digs, attacks or serves, or if they were successful or not. This lessens the time to pick out which plays to include in the highlight video, or if you wanted ot do even less work, you could get the ai tog generate the whole video for you. However, at times the platform is faulty, because it relies on seeing the player’s number to identify their plays. But my hair is long and sometimes covers my number, making it so that the ai doesn’t give me all of my plays, which is frustrating, because only one or two plays could be left out, which is hard to miss. Moreover, they are hard to find. But overall, the ai is really useful and my highlight videos would not be the same without this program.
