Technology Article – The Issues Regarding Facial Recognition Technology
The Issues Regarding Facial Recognition Technology
Lola Lavin
Comprehensive issue
Facial recognition is a technology that tracks individuals without their knowledge or consent. This is an invasion of privacy, it can occur anywhere and at any time without you knowing. While this technology offers a way to keep devices safe from being invaded. It has also become an issue. The technology of facial recognition sometimes struggles with accuracy, the majority of times being in identifying people of color, women, or individuals with more non-Western features. Misidentification can also be an issue caused by this, leading to other false arrests or security breaches. Although governments and corporations have been using facial recognition for surveillance, this action is potentially invading citizens’ privacy. On top of this, these systems can be easily hacked. All in all facial recognition causes many questions to be asked about consent, data collection, and the ways it has been used on individuals who may not agree to this. This act has led to people questioning if this is a violation of rights.
Perspective
Facial recognition has pros and cons, although it has ability to improve security and convenience, it raises ethical concerns. On the beneficial side, it protects personal devices, safety, and public spaces, and can assist a lot rules in identifying criminals. However, facial recognition for surveillance cameras without an individual’s approval feels like an invasion of your privacy and a violation of human rights. To comprehend the idea that you can be monitored at any time without knowing is uncomfortable. Additionally, the inaccuracy of technology, particularly in the misidentification of people, is a significant issue. These issues can lead to even larger consequences, such as wrongful arrest or unnecessary security checks. Furthermore, the idea that governments and corporations utilize this technology without proper supervision only makes the problem more serious. Personally I believe that facial recognition should be discussed more in relation to human rights and should analyze the ethical concerns and be more aware of how citizens may be feeling around this issue.
