Commentary on Tech News

The Apple Lightning USB charger had its ups and downs. At first, it was the only option for charging Apple devices, but people weren’t thrilled with it. The cables easily frayed, got damaged too easily, and weren’t always reliable. As a result, many folks started opting for cheaper third-party chargers, which didn’t sit well with Apple. They eventually decided to switch things up and introduced USB-C chargers. These new chargers were faster, sturdier, and worked with a wider range of devices, making life a lot easier for users who had multiple gadgets. Apple’s smart move was to address the issues with their old chargers and make things better for everyone. Generative AI poses various threats that echo human concerns. There’s the fear of its misuse, much like how fake news spreads online. Privacy and security worries arise, akin to leaving personal information vulnerable to prying eyes. Ethical questions loom large, as AI’s ability to mimic human behavior blurs the line between truth and deception. Then, there’s the unsettling prospect of job displacement, reminiscent of past industrial revolutions reshaping employment landscapes.

My Audio Mixes

I extracted audio and the instrumentals from certain songs and mixed and combined different options to make these songs.

  1. Taylor Swift & Justin Beiber

2. Trippie Redd & Raining Tacos

3. Coldplay & Spongebob

Creative Aspects

For my first creative aspect, I edited goat horns onto a photo of the greatest of all time, the GOAT, Cristiano Ronaldo. My second project is a picture of Messi understanding he needs to practice more.

Nolan Taylor Collection

This is the poster for my audio mixing project. In the first song, we can hear the south park theme song, mixed with the spongebob squarepants theme.

In the second mix, we can hear Tourner Dans le Vide, the unofficial theme song of Andrew Tate, mixed over a typical tangent of his. The third is very similar, as it is a different tangent, and different typical alpha male theme song.

Commentaries on technology news

Story 1 – Google with AI innovation

Summary

The CEO of Google and Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, speaks to 60 Minutes about his plan to infuse AI into every corner of the business. Pichai has been carefully crafting a strategy that involves AI, which was met with a surprise from longtime rival Microsoft and OpenAI. The chatbot from OpenAI seemingly knocked Google off its perch, challenging its cultural relevance. However, for Pichai, the frenzy is just part of the long game. In 2016, one of the first things Pichai did as CEO was to say that the company should be AI first. Pichai said he is incredibly excited about the beginning of what he thinks will be an extraordinary decade of innovation. Pichai grew up in Chennai, India in a middle-class family. His parents always emphasized learning and knowledge. Pichai perceived their life through the arrival of gadgets. He waited five years for a telephone, which was a rotary phone, but when it came to their home, it changed everyone’s lives. Pichai remembers getting their first television and suddenly being able to watch sports. Pichai never took technology for granted and has always been optimistic about how technology can make a difference.

My thoughts

Sundar Pichai seems to be on a mission to make AI the backbone of Google and Alphabet’s operations. His interview suggests a strategic shift towards AI-first, which isn’t surprising given the direction tech has been heading in recent years. The rivalry with Microsoft and OpenAI adds spice to the mix, highlighting the competitive landscape of the tech industry. Pichai’s personal background is interesting—it’s cool to see how his childhood experiences in Chennai shaped his outlook on technology. Waiting five years for a rotary phone definitely puts things into perspective, especially in today’s fast-paced digital world. I think that it’s pretty interesting that they are making AI the building block for new tech to come.

Story 2 – Laptop Processors

Summary

Dell’s leaked documents reveal that Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon X Series laptop CPUs have significant advantages compared to Intel, including 68% to 98% longer battery life during local video playback, depending on the display type. The leaked documents also suggest that the price of a Snapdragon X Plus is less than half the price of an Intel Raptor Lake core i7 136p. Nvidia is reportedly teaming up with mediatech to release its own arm-based Apu for PCs, which could launch as soon as next year. Open AI has announced the release of GPT 4, which features native multimodality and can process audio and images directly without having to transcribe them to text first, enabling its voice mode to respond to audio inputs within 320 milliseconds. Additionally, GPT 4 can detect and recreate different emotional tones and do improv singing. Asus has come under fire for allegedly refusing to honour warranty repair requests and expecting a payment of $200 to fix the LCD display and top case of a joystick drift issue with their Rog Ally. The company is set to unveil a new handheld, the Rog Ally X, which will retail for $800.

My thoughts

The leaked documents regarding Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon X Series laptop CPUs paint an optimistic picture, indicating significant advantages over Intel chips with notably extended battery life and a more appealing price point. Nvidia’s partnership with mediatech to develop an arm-based Apu for PCs introduces another dimension of competition to the market. OpenAI’s revelation of GPT-4 showcases impressive strides in natural language processing, boasting inherent multimodality and rapid processing of audio and images, alongside the capability to discern and replicate various emotional tones and engage in improvised singing. However, Asus faces scrutiny for purportedly rejecting warranty repair requests and demanding payment for fixes, which contrasts with the anticipation surrounding their forthcoming handheld device, the Rog Ally X, despite its hefty $800 price tag. I think that these innovations are interesting, It’s cool seeing how quickly the tech industry is changing, it’s also interesting knowing that in the near future everything will be AI.

Griff – Best Brawler (Chosen project #1 – News letter)

The greedy man is the best brawler of all time, negative diff griff.

Why he’s good

Griff’s effectiveness as a character in Brawl Stars depends on various factors, including his abilities, playstyle, and how well he synergizes with different team compositions. Here are some reasons why Griff might be considered good by players:

  1. Shopkeeper Role: Griff’s primary function in Brawl Stars is running the in-game shop. While this doesn’t directly impact gameplay, it adds a unique element to his character and makes him stand out among other brawlers.
  2. Attack Mechanism: Griff’s attack involves shooting three coins in a spread pattern. This can be effective for covering a wider area and hitting multiple targets simultaneously.
  3. Super Ability: Griff’s super ability is called “Piggy Bank,” where he throws a briefcase that explodes upon impact, dealing damage to enemies within its radius. This ability can be useful for clearing out groups of enemies or controlling certain areas of the map.
  4. High Damage Output: Griff has the potential to deal significant damage with his attacks, especially if all three coins hit a target. This makes him a threat to enemy brawlers, particularly those with lower health.
  5. Versatility: Griff’s abilities provide him with versatility in various game modes and team compositions. Whether it’s in Gem Grab, Showdown, or Brawl Ball, he can adapt to different situations and contribute effectively to his team’s success.

Overall, Griff’s combination of damage output, area control, and versatility makes him a valuable asset in many Brawl Stars matches. However, as with any character in the game, his effectiveness ultimately depends on the skill of the player controlling him and how well he fits into the team strategy.

Obama Pyramid (Chosen project #2 – Photoshop)

This is one of my projects done in Photoshop. As you can see it is an image of the Pyramids of Giza, but with Obama as one of them. I chose Obama because people like to edit him into shapes such as a sphere, a rectangle, and obviously a pyramid. So in conclusion, I photoshopped Obama as one of the pyramids by removing the background and adding Egypt, I also cropped it so it would fit.

Tech News:

#1 – Neuralink Chip

Summary:

This video shows the story of the first-ever human to receive a Neuralink chip implant. Neuralink is a new technology created and developed by Elon Musk. It comes in the form of a chip that is implanted into one’s brain. The goal of this technology is for it to read people’s brain waves and perform actions based on what they’re thinking. For example, someone would turn their light switch off in their head, and their Neuralink connected to their smart home technology would turn it off, without the person having to move at all. In this video, a man named Noland Arbaugh shows us exactly how he uses the chip in his day to day life. Noland is a quadriplegic man who became handicapped after a diving incident. He spent years confined in his home with infinite free time, but nothing to fill this time with. Now, thanks to the neuralink chip, he is capable of controlling a computer with his brain. He can do almost everything from playing chess to listening to music, just by using his brain to control the cursor. Unfortunately, there was a small issue where the threads in the chip retracted. Before he was able to get this issue repaired, it was difficult for him to adjust back to his life prior to this technology, however, the scientists behind Neuralink were able to resolve the issue and get him a new chip.

Personal Commentary:

I think this technology is going to become one of the biggest leaps in tech history. Once it gets further developed, we are going to see it used more frequently in workspaces, at home and in everyone’s day-to-day life. I find it especially inspiring that it’s helped the life of a handicapped person, and hopefully, it can help many more disabled people perform actions and tasks that they struggle with in their daily lives. I do however, fear for how this technology can be used negatively in the future. The neuralink could potentially cause harm to people’s brains or bodies, as there hasn’t been enough research for us to see these effects yet. The government or other third-party associations could hack into the chip and access extremely personal information (or even read your thoughts) through your brain waves, which could be extremely dangerous. Additionally, this technology can become extremely addictive and people can lose connection with the real world. They will begin relying so heavily on this technology to do everything for them, that we will almost be living in a world of robots. We will end up seeing the effects of what people feared with VR happening with the Neuralink chip.

#2 – New iPhone 16

Summary:

In this video, we explore the features coming to the new iPhone 16, expected to launch this September in multiple different models. They are rumoured to have a larger display, a new “capture” button, and new camera technology while keeping the square camera bump. Apple is also currently upgrading the chips used in iPhones as well as the wifi and service connection for the iPhone 16. The iphone camera technology will feature better zooming-in and zooming-out possibilities, along with a coating over the lens which will deflect excessive shinign and lens flaring, allowing for better photo quality. The new iphone will use the usb-c port, like the iphone 15, but with a better battery life.

Personal Commentary:

I believe that while these new features will improve the user’s experience, I don’t think these changes will make a significant difference. Apple releases a new iphone model every year, and with that comes plenty of old iphones thrown away and wasted. I think apple should slow down their releases and focus on making drastic improvements that are well distinguished from the rest of their models. Right now, it feels like the only people buying the new models are people who want to show off their iphones. It’s unnecessary and wastes important resources, contributing to climate change and the consumerism industry.

Evangeline’s Portfolio 2024

Hello! Welcome to Evangeline’s Portfolio, which has an overview of different projects we completed in Digital Arts 2024. Projects include new technology news, as well as custom music remixes!

_________________________________________________________________________

These projects display my skills with audio editing as well as photoshopping and digital arts. I made my poster using three platforms, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and also Procreate. The elements on the poster represent the songs I chose, and also detail the different remixes. Further, I used Adobe to mix many different audio tracks.

Salvatore (Lana Del Rey)

In this remix, I replaced the original soundtrack with orchestral one, as well as added more echo to allow the song to sound more angelic! I kept the original voice, but made it quieter at certain points so the orchestra could be heard more.

Can’t Catch Me Now (Hunger Games)

This remix was inspired by a newly released song from the Hunger Games which Maya and I went to watch together. I changed the voice so that it sounded more distant, and had an 8D effect to it. At certain points, the sound gets more distant, and in other places, the voice appears closer. I wanted to add these effects because the song itself was about Lucy Gray who went missing, but her songs can still be heard!

Heather X Traitor (Conan Gray + Olivia Rodrigo)

Although I don’t listen to these songs as much anymore, I remixed these songs because they were nostalgic and reminded me off when I was in Grade 7! I mixed two songs together, Heather and Traitor, because I thought the songs had similar meanings and rhythms. I kept Heather’s soundtrack in the back, but alternated the different voices when I felt like there was a good transition.

Misinformation Campaign Project

My first flexible project was my Critical Thinking and Communications misinformation campaign (22 minute video). This project was made to represent what a biased news source looks like, and the language they would use to spread misinformation. I used a new software named Flexclip to edit together the videos we filmed. I spent approximately 4 hours editing this project on Flexclip, and used my abilities to make transitions, news labels, audio, and editing the quality of the videos so that the video would look similar to that of an actual news source.

#1 Chip-making giant, Nvidia, surpasses Apple in value

Summary: Nvidia, a giant chip-making firm, has surpassed Apple in value! It has surpassed over $3tn dollars. The firm’s share price rose more than 5% on Wednesday, to more than $1,224! This means that Nvidia has just beat Apple, and is now second place, becoming one of the world’s most valued tech companies. Microsoft is currently in first place, but with Nvidia’s rapid growth (earning one trillion dollars in 3 months), they are quickly catching up to first place. Currently, the AI market is in a frenzy, with the market constantly adapting and hard to catch up. However, Nvidia continues to show business momentum, where despite the worry that demands for chips will slow, it has not slowed down yet. Analysts comment on this, by stating that they expect Nvidia to stay dominant for 3-5 years.

Personal Opinion: In my opinion, I believe that we are heading into an “AI revolution”, where lots of big tech companies (like OpenAI or Apple) are rushing to the top, and trying to outdo each other. This means that many new models are being adapted, but also that the market itself for AI is constantly adapting and changing. Although this means that it might be hard for tech companies to keep up with, seeing as a lot of this technology requires chips, and Nvidia is a good and trustworthy source, I believe that Nvidia will continue to steadily grow. For example, in the video, they mentioned that hundreds of thousands of chips are needed for X-AI to build a super-computer that they want to build, and thats only for one buyer.

As the AI Market continues to grow, with many more companies and nations from around the world joining in, I think that the AI market would be a good place to invest in. However, I believe there are also some concerns when it comes to ethics, considering the growing amount of deepfakes that are coming along with AI. I think that when it comes to AI, specific boundaries should always be set as to which areas we should research in, and which ones we shouldn’t. Another pressing concern would also be automatization, where many jobs are also being taken by AI.

#2 More useful AI

Summary: After an Oxford study which showed that barely anyone uses AI on a daily basis, chatbots and developers have started give out new features. For example, OpenAI just gave all users the feature to upload images and documents in an attempt to attract new users. As well, ChatGPT launched a new program named ChatGPT Edu, which gives discounts to schools to convince them to use it for teaching and learning. Further, OpenAI has supposedly signed a deal for it’s AI to be incorporated into the next Apple technology. Lastly, TikTok is also apparently working on an algorithm to make sure that TikTok won’t be banned in the US. However, many bills are currently being passed to ban phones in school.

Personal Opinion: In my opinion, I think that this quick expansion of AI into all of these fields could be dangerous. Although I recognize that this could help a lot of people, I don’t believe that it would benefit children in terms of education. Even right now, a lot of scholars are using AI, especially ChatGPT to cheat. This means that once ChatGPT begins making more of their features accessible, and even giving discount packets and encouraging schools to use them, then it makes it far easier for students to avoid actual learning and instead use chatbots to do their homework. Even if sometimes, AI can be a tool for learning, I believe that the further development of AI in this field could be more harmful than helpful.

On the contrary, I believe there should be less restrictions being put on apps like TikTok, and for phones to not be banned in schools. As a student myself, I often need to call my mom, or research certain information on my phone (for example, I use my phone a lot when it comes to science to easily take pictures of my lab and record data), and it’s important for emergencies. I think we should allow for teachers to confiscate phones if they are used in classrooms, but during breaks, I don’t see why students shouldn’t be able to have their phones.
