https://www.business-standard.com/technology/tech-news/google-s-second-gen-pixel-fold-prototype-pics-show-redesigned-camera-island-124020800714_1.html

Google is developing a second-generation Pixel Fold, which features significant design updates based on recent prototype images. The most notable change is the shift from the prominent camera bar seen on previous Pixel devices to a square-shaped camera bump located in the corner. This redesign aims to give the Pixel Fold 2 a sleeker appearance. Additionally, the new foldable is expected to have larger displays, with the inner screen measuring 7.9 inches and the cover screen 6.4 inches. The device will also be thinner than its predecessor, measuring 5.27mm when unfolded and 10.54mm when folded. Other anticipated specs include up to 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, though it’s unclear if it will feature the Tensor G3 or G4 chipset

The Pixel Fold 2 seems to be stepping up its game with significant design updates aimed at a sleeker appearance. The shift from a prominent camera bar to a corner-located square bump is a notable change. Larger displays and thinner build add to its appeal. However, its chipset remains a mystery. Exciting times ahead for Google’s foldable innovation.

The Nothing Phone 2a will start at $239. This smartphone will not be available internationally, but only in India. The Nothing Phone 2a packs custom built MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro. It is a mid-ranger SoC that positions itself in the middle of of the Snapdragon 778G+ found in the Phone 1 and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 inside the Phone 2. The Phone 2a boasts a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support, and Gorilla Glass 5 protection. News! – New Huawei Watch 4 Pro Space Exploration edition smartwatch could arrive in Europe

https://www.notebookcheck.net/New-Huawei-Watch-4-Pro-Space-Exploration-edition-smartwatch-could-arrive-in-Europe.832331.0.html

The Huawei Watch 4 Pro Space Exploration edition is expected to launch in Europe. In the X post, the leaker claimed that the Huawei watch edition will go on sale in Europe. However, they did not suggest when this might happen or any evidence. The Space Exploration model features a red and gray design with a ceramic bezel and a pattern on the crown linked to a rocket’s engine. The watch has a 1.5-inch AMOLED LTPO screen and lasts for four to five days with typical use. The updated watch includes Health Glance 2.0 with new health metrics and an Ultra Wide Band car key option. The European launch and pricing for the Huawei Watch 4 Pro Space Exploration edition are pending.

In my opinion, the Huawei watch is a great watch, with the features similar to all other watches. But it is significantly cheaper than all the other Samsung, Google, Apple, Xiaomi watches. Furthermore, the battery life of Huawei wearables have significantly more battery life.

Researchers in Leeds have developed an AI tool called Find-HF that can identify patients at risk of heart failure using patient medical records. This could allow for earlier diagnosis and treatment, potentially improving the quality of life for patients. The tool was trained on data from over half a million UK patients and can predict patients at high risk within five years.

Editorial:

This AI tool can help avoid deaths due to heart failure, which is another one of the many benefits of AI. The future of AI is immeasurable, being able to replace the job of doctors and many more to better our lives.

This is an article about artificial intelligence (AI) in sleep medicine. It discusses how AI is being used to diagnose and treat sleep disorders. AI can also help people track their sleep patterns and improve their sleep quality. However, experts warn that AI is not a replacement for human doctors.

Editorial:

AI can also diagnose sleep disorders now, which makes a lot of the doctors obsolete. However, doctors can also use this tool in order to better their own ways of diagnosing and treating sleep disorders, as well as prescribing medicine and such, making AI a valuable tool for doctors.

#5 News Story 2

Summary

OpenAI’s GPT-4o represents a significant advancement in AI, offering more natural and engaging interactions with users. This new version can conduct voice conversations in real-time, mimicking human-like traits such as empathy, humor, and responsiveness to emotional cues. It integrates text, images, audio, and video, making it versatile for various applications like education and customer service. While it raises ethical concerns about emotional attachment and manipulation, GPT-4o’s broader availability in the free version of ChatGPT democratizes access to advanced AI, allowing millions worldwide to benefit from its enhanced features and capabilities

My Thoughts

From my perspective, while GPT-4o’s advancements in AI are impressive, there are significant concerns that must be addressed. The ability of GPT-4o to mimic human emotions and behaviour raises ethical questions about the potential for users to form deep, potentially unhealthy emotional attachments. This could lead to over-reliance on AI for social interaction and even manipulation. Additionally, the AI’s capacity to engage on a personal level might blur the lines between human and machine interactions, which can be unsettling and possibly harmful. While the democratization of this technology allows broader access, the potential negative impacts on mental health and the ethical implications of such human-like AI behaviour suggest that the cons might outweigh the pros. It’s crucial to carefully consider these aspects as we integrate such advanced AI into society

#6 Mona Lisa – Photoshop

For this photoshop project I decided to combine my favourite show from when I was little, and the painting which terrified me at the same age. First I knew I wanted Curious George to be interacting with the image, so I edited him out of a picture from the show of him hanging from a tree, and rotated and resized him to be holding her hair and standing on her shoulder. Later I noticed George’s arm was sticking out of the image, so I rotated it separately, as well as the hand. I also decided Mona Lisa herself needed an aspect of Curious George, so I added the Man With the Yellow Hat’s hat to her. Lastly, I gave George a part of da Vinci, by adding his hat to the monkey’s head.

#7 Cartoon Flower – Illustrator

I chose to explore Illustrator for the first time, and decided to take a highly detailed png of a flower and edit it to make it look more cartoon-like. I painted over details using the paintbrush feature and played around with texture, but decided to keep it simple. I also added a shadow effect around the image to make it appear more cartoonish. This was a fun introduction to the program and although there is still so much you can do with it I now feel like I have the basic knowledge to create more projects.

These are my Technology News stories

My first tech news review was about the rising of artificial intelligence. It has absolutely dominated the tech industry to the point where a survey showed that half of US workers are now using AI in their work, especially in social media, crypto currency, and many other sectors. Reporters say that AI has become mainstream this year, mainly because of the release of ChatGPT 4.0. Many found that ChatGPT 4.0 was very effective, simple, and easy to use which would aid them in their work. Many thought that this would be more accessible and easier to use which made them decide that they would give it a try. The video also talks about Elon Musk and how he aided the world in technological advancements, specifically about X.

My second tech news story is a review on what the AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2 might look like. This year, I have found intrest in wireless earbuds so I was quite excited to come across this video although it is not the most recent. The premise is that the lower tier AirPods(not pro) will have active noise cancellation, but no one knows how this will work unless they give the lower tier silicone tips which I find quite interesting. Apple is also likely working on turning all devices into USB-C, which they have already make progress with for iPhone 15, AirPods Pro 2, and obviously Macbooks. The speculated AirPods 4 will have the new H2 chip which will make them quite similar to the current AirPods Pro 2. This is a step up for the AirPods(regular) line. While the AirPods 4 might get the H2 chip, the AirPods Pro 3 potentially might include an H3 chip which will include features such as health stats. Finally, the AirPods Max is not getting much. It will get an H2 chip and USB-C plus new colours but nothing else. It has been 2 years and they will likely barely receive any new features. I am overall extremely excited for these AirPods to be released.

The Future, Too Early: The Humane Ai Pin

The Humane Ai Pin, released in early 2024 after being announced on November 10, has made waves in the technology industry. Humane’s pilot project, the Ai Pin, is a small wearable device that is meant to take the place of a smartphone. It has a small projector that can project onto your hands but mostly operates through speech. The device, costing $950 CAD, is backed by Sam Altman and OpenAI and uses ChatGPT to back the AI the pin relies on. The Ai Pin still has several features locked and “coming soon”, and has seen issues with limited functionality and slow response times (as the AI has to go to the Cloud to generate responses).

Read My Opinion

I think that the Human Ai Pin is simply put, a device that seriously lacks basic capabilities. It’s camera is low quality, it is plagued by slow response times, is often incorrect, has terrible battery life and can’t access many everyday apps. If the Human Ai Pin is meant to replace a smartphone, I should be able to order Doordash or communicate with my friends through Instagram. The Ai Pin doesn’t let me do that right now. The Humane Ai Pin was made to communicate with large language models – not apps. Even then, it doesn’t do it very well, with some responses being blatantly wrong. Additionally, note that the pin is expensive. For $950, I can get smartphones with pretty high specifications. If the pin was $200, I would consider the limited functionality to be more acceptable, however, the pin is comparable to other phones. That’s the nail in the coffin. Why spend a thousand dollars on a pin with limited functionality when I can just take my phone out and access a much better experience? The Ai Pin is trying to use the technology of the future in our present day, and this ambitious attitude creates a product that is fundamentally flawed.

ChatGPT-4o: What’s in Store?

On May 14th, 2024, ChatGPT parent company OpenAI released its newest version of its popular generative AI service, ChatGPT. Called GPT-4o, for Omni, OpenAI’s newest flagship model, costing $20 CAD per month for users, has shown the unprecedented speeds at which generative AI has developed. GPT-4o has the ability to go beyond just texting, it now has the ability to interpret audio and use vision like never before. In demonstration videos posted by OpenAI, you can see popular figures like Sal Khan interacting and learning things like Mathematics via ChatGPT’s audio functions. The plethora of videos posted by OpenAI have garnered millions of views combined and show the GPT-4o’s unprecedented ability to prepare individuals for interviews, sing, or tell dad jokes – all in a conversational and audio-based format. The real-life nature of the voice has raised concerns about online safety.

GPT-4o has not come without controversy however, with popular actress Scarlett Johansson claiming that one of its voices mimicked her likeness. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has vowed that the voice does not mimic her, however has said that the company will discontinue the usage of the voice.

Read My Opinion

As a subscriber to GPT-4o, I am surely biased in favour of ChatGPT. I totally believe that AI is our future and its time to adapt. However, that does not mean I am not aware of the threats it poses to our safety. Generative AI and its unprecedented rate of growth threatens our safety online through things like fraud and misinformation. I think that Artificial Intelligence needs to be open to growth and innovation, as it is our future. However, governments need to pass restrictions and guidelines to ensure the growth of these platforms does not outpace our security features. AI is a wonderful tool, but it is also a devastating one when it gets into the wrong hands.

Google AI Search Errors

Summary:

Recently, people have been finding that Google’s new AI has been giving strange and possibly dangerous answers. Users have been sharing experiences where the AI gives them advice such as “eating one small rock per day is recommended”, referencing an article from The Onion, a satirical website. But, Google says that these are “isolated examples”, and not an accurate representation of everyday user activity.

The AI was first released to a small sect of people in the UK in April, but was released to the general public in the US in May. The purpose of this AI is to give a brief summary of a topic when you search. Google is currently waring

Critique:

This wouldn’t be the first time that Google’s AI has had some issues. In February of 2024, Google released Gemini, a chatbot which was under fire due to its large amounts of diversity. While normally this would be a good thing, when asked to generate images of a historical figure such as George Washington, it often depicted him as a person of colour. While Google dominates in the search engine industry, it shows many struggles in AI. Even though Google has invested $100 billion into developing AI, we haven’t been able to see the results of that yet. I am still optimistic for the future, and I hope that they will be able to release an AI as good as their search engine.

Notebook LM

Summary:

Originally called Tailwind, Google has released a new AI called Notebook LM, which may be the new way to take notes. Google says that they started building the system from scratch, with a language model in the centre (hence the LM).

In our ever-changing world, there is a lot of new information which can be very difficult to keep up with. Google proposes that this will be able to condense information from multiple sources, greatly helping students and teachers. The AI also lets you “ground” the AI into your sources. Notebook LM can provide summaries, be asked questions about the uploaded document, and even create short scripts or even podcast episodes based on the content it is given.

Critique:

I personally believe that, while Notebook LM is a very impressive technology, it may not be suitable for many students, especially those in grades 8-10. This is because teachers often don’t provide students with the materials that the AI needs to do what it was programmed to do – condense large amounts of information into small, easy to read points. This also isn’t the first AI to be able to achieve something like this. Chat GPT and other language-model AI’s also have the capabilities to consensus information and present it in new ways. But, I was able to try it out, and I was able to find that it is able to condense a 60-page document in less than 15 seconds, which is incredibly fast, especially for an experimental model. Overall, I do believe that this AI is a good concept, it doesn’t have anything that separates itself from its competitors.

1st Commentary on Tech News: ChatGPT4-o

OpenAI recently made GPT-4o available to everybody who has an OpenAI account, and GPT-4o has some very scary and very innovative features. The first one I’ll talk about is the ability to have a “real” conversation. GPT-4o has a voice and can actively participate in a conversation with 1 or more people. The voice and the mannerisms of GPT-4o are already way ahead of every other AI voice. The voice sounds very close to being real, and the AI knows how to make jokes, laugh, and respond at correct times. Although it isn’t perfect, and sometimes struggles to understand the context of a conversation, most of the time it’s pretty accurate. What makes it even more realistic is the response time. The average response time of GPT-4o is 320 milliseconds, and it can respond as quick as 232 milliseconds. In an interactive human conversation, the average response time is around 250 milliseconds. This means that GPT-4o is nearing human response speed, sounds like a human, and can communicate like a human. Less than 2 years ago, ChatGPT was launched, and since then, AI has grown at extremely quick rates. The possibilities in the near future for AI look very innovative and interesting. Personally, I think that it may be a lot sooner than we think before AI begins to replace people’s jobs, because already people are trying to include AI into robots, and once that becomes publicly available, assuming these robots could function well, many jobs could get replaced causing a job shortage worse than what we saw from the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic.

2nd Commentary on Tech News: Apple Vision Pro

The Apple Vision Pro was released on February 2nd to the United States and still has yet to release globally to the rest of the world. The Apple Vision Pro is a headset with both Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) into one. It makes for an immersive experience, it’s good for entertainment, and regular productivity similar to that you could do on an iPhone. It’s very high quality, but right now gets dwarfed by other headsets on the market due to similar quality to some Meta headsets while being significantly more expensive. Apple definitely has plans to make better versions in the future, and the first ever Apple Vision Pro wasn’t really meant to be sold to the public; at least it hasn’t been optimized to do so, which will change in years to come.

Personally, I will not even think of purchasing the Apple Vision Pro in this form. The only reason I would ever purchase a headset as of now is for gaming, and Meta currently dominates that market, so I would rather take a Meta Quest headset. Now, although it has some unique features, it doesn’t outweigh the fact that it is around 3x the price of the Meta Quest in my opinion. I believe what Apple wants is for this to be a mainstream thing that everyone will own for their every day life. If so, then this is the correct direction, or at least that’s what it seems like to me. I think that if it gets lighter, easier to use, and cheaper, it could become as common as an iPhone, although I think it will be a little more alien and will take longer to be integrated into society rather than the iPhone which took over the world in less than decade.

Testing an AI checker: Comparing my Essay to An AI Generated Essay to see if an “AI checker” can spot the difference

After inputting my essay into GPTZero, it gave my essay a 7% chance of being written by AI. I, of course, wrote my essay entirely without the aid of others, or AI. Then, after giving the AI the same prompt I had for my english essay, and then copy and pasting that into GPTZero, it gave that essay a 100% chance of being written by AI. Pretty remarkably accurate, even if it is a small sample size. Then, after asking ChatGPT to write this essay again, this time to go undetected, GPTZero came back with a 100% AI chances again. Although things changed when I ran the AI generated essay through Quillbot. Quillbot is a paraphrasing AI that can be used to try and go undetected by AI checkers such as GPTZero, and these results surprised me. After running the essay through Quillbot.com, GPTZero said there was only a 17% likelihood of the essay being written by AI. Ultimately, a very interesting experiment to test the accuracy of AI checkers.

OBS Video

Hi, I’m Nolan Chan and I’m part of the Programming and Robotics 8/9 Class. Below are some projects I’ve done at home and at school to showcase my skills learned in class.

Trinket Projects

At the beginning of the year, we were required to make 2 projects with Trinket.io and our basic knowledge of Python. Use the

My first project was a simple password interface that used basic Python functions

<iframe src="https://trinket.io/embed/python/e3b01f6090" width="100%" height="600" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

My second project was a simple food-ordering system that also used simple Python functions

<iframe src="https://trinket.io/embed/python/d0df997393" width="100%" height="600" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

NHL Predictions

After winter break, we put together a spreadsheet to analyze and predict players in the NHL and how many points they would have at certain checkpoints during the year. Each student chose 25 players and had to put together an optimal way to organize and analyze their players via the NHL API. Below are my prediction differences compared to the actual points across the 25 players. Here is an interactive chart that displays my point prediction differences on each checkpoint date.

End-of-Year Projects:

At the end of the year, each student is tasked with creating 3 end-of-year projects and creating 2 articles on recent tech news events that happened this year. 2 of these must be programming and robotics-related (ie. using trinkets to create a code, using the Jetson Nano Linux boxes and creating functions with them, etc.). Students were also tasked with narrating their website (the one you see now) and briefly touching on each of the points on the website, via OBS recording software.

End Of Year Project 1: Trinket Number Guessing Game

This is a simple number-guessing game that ranges from 1 to 100. I incorporated the randint (random number function) into my project for fun to see how I could use it.

End Of Year Project 2: To-Do

This is another simple but useful application of Python: a to-do list.

End Of Year Project 3: CapCut Images over Music

Article 1: Sora, AI Video Generation

OpenAI has been on the frontlines of the new generation of the internet: Artificial Intelligence. It’s notable for making AI tools including ChatGPT, the first mainstream large language model that accepts prompts and answers them, and DALL-E, the first mainstream AI image generator. These have had a significant impact across the tech industry, with investors and companies flocking over to this new sub-industry of the tech industry. With new innovations coming daily in the AI industry, the introduction of Sora, the upcoming AI video generation tool being released by OpenAI is another step forward for the very young and prospering Artificial Intelligence sector

Personally I think this is a large step in the daily use and usefulness of AI as a whole, but I also believe that with such a broad category that Sora is covering (AI video generation), there must be sufficient guardrails and safety features to be implemented into the system to prevent bad actors from using it for a variety of inappropriate ways (that I cannot talk about in this article). On the flipside, this technology could have a very large ripple effect across multiple industries once released. These industries include the filming, gaming, and advertisement industries, as well as many others. This would also significantly change the jobs of animators and photographers, as now, even though Sora is still in the early stages of development, their jobs and tasks can be done in a matter of seconds to minutes with only a prompt from the user.

Article 2: Knock Off Name Brand Technology

With the rise of cheap tech websites like Temu, Wish, AliExpress, and more, there comes the slew of knock-off name-brand products too. Some are obvious knockoffs, while others are actually trying to be the legitimate thing. These products, often known as “reps” aren’t talked about often and aren’t given the credit they deserve. Many name-brand items such as Airpods, Jordans, and Gucci Bags retain much of their value in their brand, rather than the product itself. This means that a Gucci bag without the Gucci logo would only be worth $100, but with the logo and official branding, it could cost upwards of $20,000. Good reps are often made in the same factory as the real product but are branded differently and shipped in obscure places. Many of the products sold on the cheap tech websites listed in the beginning are often not legitimate reps but attempts at creating a similar product.

I personally buy and use these products on a daily basis, and since I’m not an audio or shoe connoisseur, I quite honestly can’t tell the difference between the name brand and off-brand products and I highly recommend people try it out. Just make sure you check the reviews to make sure it’s not a scam!

AUDIO MIX:

Drawn on Procreate

Transferred to Photoshop to embed QR code

“ETA”, by NewJeans

For my rendition of “ETA”, by NewJeans, I chose to add-in an introduction/lead-in to the beginning of the song by compiling a multitude of audio versions for the final product.

“GET UP”, by NewJeans

For my audio mix of “Get Up”, also by NewJeans, I found a version sung by a male. I decided to take his vocals, and find the instrumental version of the original song, slowing down the song to adjust to the speed he sings at.

“LMLY”, by Jackson Wang

For “LMLY”, by Jackson Wang, I solely just slowed down the song, and with the knowledge that I have with the software, also added reverb to the song to add more depth to the song.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS:

AI GENERATED SUMMARY:

Google’s new “Hum to Search” feature allows users to find songs by simply humming or whistling melodies into their phones. This feature utilizes machine learning algorithms to analyze the melody and match it with potential song matches from Google’s vast database. Once a match is found, users can listen to the song, view its lyrics, and explore more information about it. This feature aims to make song discovery easier and more accessible for users.

MY PERSPECTIVE:

With Google’s newest feature allowing for Google to identify songs based on various presentations, it allows for users to find the song that they’re looking for. For people like me, I get intrigued by songs but don’t know the name of them. Sometimes, other song identification apps such as “Soundhound” or “Shazam” aren’t able to find what I’m looking for so Google’s new feature brings hope of being able to do what these other apps cannot. I personally believe that Google’s song identification software sounds great on paper, but also feels like they’re trying to keep up with the trend of music, following softwares that already does the exact same thing.

AI GENERATED SUMMARY:

The article explores the intersection of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and the art world. It discusses how AI-generated art is revolutionizing traditional artistic processes by enabling artists to create innovative pieces using algorithms and machine learning techniques. It highlights various examples of AI-generated art, including paintings, music compositions, and poetry, and examines the implications of this technology for the future of creativity and artistic expression. The article also delves into the debate surrounding the authenticity and originality of AI-generated art, raising questions about authorship and the role of human artists in the creative process. Overall, it offers insights into the transformative potential of generative AI in the realm of art.

MY PERSPECTIVE:

When OpenAI first released AI technology, it was catastrophic towards the education system because of how this technology was able to complete assignments from teachers. However, not many would’ve known that AI art pieces would become so relevant so quickly. Not only did one AI software be released, but so many others as well. The uprise of AI art generators became overwhelming to so many people. From an artist’s perspective, one would wonder why people would pay for people that require time against technology that can create what they need within minutes, if not seconds. However, from prior knowledge that is not from this article, there are many that claim that the AI generated art pieces don’t have the “human connection” aspect compared to when real people actually create pieces of art.

AP DIGITAL ART PIECE:

Although this piece was not created In “Digital Media Development 12”, I used applications such as “Adobe Illustrator” and “Adobe Photoshop” to help upload various images into various formats to go into my Digital Portfolio for another course, “AP Studio Drawing”.
