Apple Intelligence and User Privacy

Summary Paragraph

Recently the question has arisen, “Is Apple really protecting our privacy?”. Many people have speculated about this topic and recently some truth has come out. As the iPhone 16 arrives, users are concerned about new “Apple Intelligence” being slowly integrated into their phones.

One of many concerns regarding Apple Intelligence is the reworked voice assistant, Siri, who will now be able to use Apple Intelligence to perform commands the user initiates. For instance, if you say, “What time did Owais say to meet him for lunch?” Siri will now be able to find that information and respond. This definitely creeped out some users who are scared for their security and privacy. As said in the CyberNews article, “After years of data exploitation reports by other big tech firms, users have a right to be skeptical”.

Critical Thoughts

Even I feel concerns regarding AI being integrated into our phones, and what right we will have to easily opt out of it. ChatGPT being involved makes me feel like something is fishy about all of this. There are also many significant worries about the amount of personal data AI can collect. It’s been known that Apple has sugar coated things like privacy issues in the past to its users, which obviously leaves users skeptical. Due to this, they may worry about what could occur following the AI tech integration that Apple is taking part of. Yes, there are tools that analyse our content, write essays, recognize photos, but truly where do we draw the line? Are we accelerating towards an AI future too fast?

Lack of difference in newer iPhone models

Summary Paragraph

With the new iPhone 16 being brought into the public eye, people on social media were quick to respond to the new phone, many of the responses being negative. It’s been a known thing that Apple has seemed to not put much thought into drastically changing the physical appearance to the iPhone, which has definitely been a disappointment to some, especially since truly not many changes to the iPhones physical appearance have changed since the iPhone 11 came out in 2019, nearly half a decade ago. The only differences we see as far as physical appearance goes are the display sizes, new colour variations, new camera look (only on 16 and 16+), and the new camera button placed on the side of the phone. Apple Intelligence is one of the most anticipated new features but has gotten much backlash, and the 15s are getting it too so it isn’t technically unique to the 16s.

Critical Thoughts

Despite the “under the hood” changes, many including myself, still feel the need for more of a change. For instance if we look all the way back to the 5-6s, or more recently the XR-11 Pro Max, we see a much more drastic difference than what we’re seeing now in my opinion. I’m unsure if it’s laziness on Apple’s part or just poor planning but I genuinely think it would be more beneficial if they lengthened the time between iPhone release dates. Maybe even just half a year more could make a bigger difference when it comes to iPhones because I always tend to feel that they’re getting a bit rushed, and Apple is just throwing whatever they can in there to make the “new” phone seem cooler. Honestly I don’t want to be convinced, I want to look and use the phone and be sold. For me that was how I felt with the Iphone Xs, and 11s when they were released, and nowadays that feeling is almost never reciprocated.

Article 1: RedBull Oracle Racing RB-20 and RB-21

Sources:https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/has-red-bull-found-the-smoking-gun-for-its-rb20-problems/10651662/

https://www.gpblog.com/en/news/330792/verstappen-exposes-rb21-s-biggest-problem.html

https://www.si.com/fannation/racing/f1briefings/news/red-bull-slammed-by-f1-insider-for-struggling-to-handle-max-verstappen-criticism-01jn68fh6awd

Summary:

Last year Redbull Racing’s RB-20 was extremely underwhelming, while in the past they’ve historically had pretty decent cars and extremely talented drivers especially as of recent however last season their car was an absolute mess with Verstappen’s brakes failing catastrophically in the middle of the Australian GP leaving the back of his car on fire. Max Verstappen stated that the car was “less compliant than its predecessors” later after the season had ended Redbull stated that the RB-20 had frequent balance issues, Christian Horner the Redbull team principal said in a press conference “It’s disconnected front and rear. We can see that. Our wind tunnel doesn’t say that, but the track says that. So it’s getting on top of that, because obviously when you have that, it means you can’t trust your tools. Then you have to go back to track data and previous experience.” however it seems that they might not have learned from their mistakes, as in pre-season testing last month the RB-21 had not lived up to the expectations of Verstappen and their new rookie Liam Lawson however they’ve both acknowledged that its better than last years it was still lagging behind Mclaren (their main competitors for the world title) by about 0.244 seconds on the first day of testing however this might just be Verstappen getting used to the car as on the 3rd day he beat Oscar Piastri in time by about 0.374 seconds, Verstappen even saying “In terms of balance, it does feel a bit better now on corner entry and in the middle of the corner. But on the other hand, there are still problems with the kerbs and with the bumps,” so while the RB-21 has improved on the failure of the RB-20 It still has some major unresolved problems.

My Thoughts:

I really hope that the RB-21 performs a lot better than it did last year however just I predict that as time goes on and more GPs are played it will reveal even more problems with the RB-21 just like how last year in the beginning of the season there weren’t to many problems with the RB-20 however as time went on more and more problems became apparent, as I personally am a big redbull as well as a Max Verstappen fan I hope and believe that he can manage to pull away with world title this season just like how last season he still managed to win world champion title even though they’re cars may not be as great as a lot of the other teams cars are.

Article 2: Ps5 Pro

https://www.tomsguide.com/news/ps5-pro

Summary:

The Ps5 Pro is a new upgraded version of the base Ps5 releasing on November 7th that has been facing tons of backlash from playstation fans due to essentially a slightly better ps5 with no disc drive. It also has the price of 700 usd which is a whole lot more than the starting price of the ps5 (300 usd).

My Thoughts:

I think this is an absolute waste of material, time, webspace and money why would anyone go out walk to a game store and drop a whole $700 (usd) for essentially a ps5 but a tiny bit better but that might not even end up being true because  most games are upwards of 100 gb meaning with no disk drive the ps5 will always have insane download times for almost every game and the 2 most likely reasons that they removed the disk drive in the first place are one: to save money and two: because they want to make even more money by forcing you to only buy games off of their online store. In conclusion the overall thought and idea of the ps5 pro is just a dumb waste of money.

Article 3: Huawei Tri-fold phone

https://www.reuters.com/technology/huaweis-2800-tri-fold-phone-hits-stores-amid-supply-concerns-2024-09-20

Summary:

Huawei unveiled their new over $2000  tri-folding phone, the “Mate XT” so far pre-orders have exceeded 6.5 million According to Lori Chang, a senior analyst at Isaiah Research, the Mate XT is powered by the same Kirin 9010 5G processor that was featured in the Pura 70 smartphone series, which was released in April. This device is considered significant for resisting U.S. technology restrictions. She noted that recent assessments suggest the Huawei Mate XT may be experiencing production yield issues with key components, such as the panel, cover glass, and hinges. The release of the Mate XT, which analysts highlight as featuring a domestically-produced chipset, showcases Huawei’s capability to overcome U.S. sanctions. It also strengthens its competition against Apple in China, where some consumers have criticised the new iPhone 16 for lacking AI features.

My thoughts:

I think that unlike the Ps5 pro this is a useful update too a product with a reasonable price considering that single fold phones now a days are around $3000 (usd) so considering this it’s actually kind of a steal, though considering it’s made, produced and designed in China its likely that it was made at a greatly reduced price, though due to this i’ve heard that tons of scalpers have moved in and most common people will have to pay up to 10’000 dollars to get it which is the reason i think that more companies should include pre-order/buying amount limits. In conclusion I think that Huawei’s new phone is a great innovation on an already great phone.

The issue between the United States and China regarding TikTok talks about national security concerns and data privacy. The U.S. government, especially with Trump in office, has expressed fears that TikTok’s company, ByteDance, could be influenced by the Chinese government, potentially using the app to collect user data for spying or influence activities. As a result, the U.S. has pushed for the sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations to an American company, setting a deadline for a deal. Meanwhile, China has pushed back, arguing that the U.S. is unfairly targeting Chinese companies, and has emphasized the importance of protecting its own businesses and data. This conflict reflects the rivalry between the two nations, highlighting the tensions over technology, trade, and influence in the global arena.https://www.reuters.com/technology/trump-says-tiktok-sale-deal-come-before-saturday-deadline-2025-03-30

2. Amazon is making a major investment in North Carolina by spending $10 billion to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure. This project, located in Richmond County, is expected to create at least 500 high-skilled jobs, such as data center engineers and network specialists. Amazon already employs about 24,000 people in the state and is also growing its retail operations with new last-mile delivery facilities. This investment is part of a larger trend among big tech companies, like Amazon, to build more data centers to support the growing demand for AI applications. In the first quarter of 2025, Amazon’s capital expenditures reached approximately $25 billion, and the company plans to maintain that level of spending throughout the year. Despite concerns about overcapacity in the industry, Amazon’s CEO has emphasized the importance of these investments to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/amazon-invest-10-billion-north-carolina-expand-cloud-ai-infrastructure-2025-06-04

3. Apple and Samsung are facing significant challenges in 2025 due to new U.S. tariffs that are impacting their smartphone businesses. Analysts have reduced global smartphone shipment growth forecasts from 4.2% to 1.9%, citing uncertainties surrounding U.S. tariffs . Apple, heavily reliant on manufacturing in China and Vietnam, may face around $39.5 billion in tariff costs, potentially leading to a 32% decline in operating profit if the company absorbs these costs . Samsung, while less dependent on China, is also affected by tariffs on countries like Vietnam and South Korea, where it produces many of its devices . Both companies are exploring strategies to mitigate these impacts, such as shifting production to other countries and adjusting pricing. However, the ongoing trade tensions and tariff uncertainties continue to pose significant risks to their operations and profitability https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/04/apple-samsung-smartphone-growth-cut-due-to-tariffs-analysts.html

Full year overview

OBS Overview

Tech article 1 – Deepseek

Recently an AI bot that goes by the name deepseek was introduced to the market and it instantly got huge amounts of attention. One of the reasons for this was the fact that it was created in China. Before its release it was commonly believed that the US had control over the AI race and that the competition was domestic but when deepseek came out it shook this belief causing companies like Nvidia to break stock market records by losing nearly 600 billion in one day. One other reason for the huge impact deepseek had was how much it cost. Deepseek is estimated to have cost around 6 million dollars to train whereas chat-gpt cost 100-200 million dollars. This is huge because it shows that they trained something nearly as powerful for much less. This gap may also be because chat-gpt was the first so it had to train organically but Deepseek could have used Chat-gpts work to speed up their process.

My thoughts

My thoughts on this technology outbreak is that if the worst case scenario is true being that Deepseek really is just a more effective way of doing the same thing than this is very bad for north america but if the more likely truth is that deepseek just used Chat-gpt to train itself that there is nothing to worry about. If that is the case then the only thing China has shown in this is that they can copy America’s work which is fine because then they will always be behind. I also think that there is very little information on this right now so the market crash was understandable but I think that it was extremely exaggerated.

Tech article 2 – LiFePO4 battery

A large portion of electric car batteries contain Cobalt, in their cathode (where the positively charged electrode is located. The problem with Cobalt is that it is mined in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where mining is not sufficiently regulated. In the Congo Mining conditions are terrible and child labor is often used. Additionally there is very little Cobalt in the earth of the United States which is a problem both economically and politically. A solution to this is the LiFePO4 battery which was created by John B. Goodenough at the University of Texas in 1996. LiFePO4 is cobalt-free and instead uses iron phosphate instead, which is much more easily sourced both ethically and geologically. Until recently this battery was not able to produce the same levels of effectiveness as Cobalt batteries, until in 2020 when BYD  was able to create a high density variety which is now equal to or occasionally more powerful than Cobalt batteries. This is a huge step forward in the future of American batteries because now American electric car companies, for example Tesla, can now produce their batteries more domestically and requiring less importation.

My thoughts

My thoughts on this are overall positive because China controls a large portion of the Cobalt mining and if Cobalt was required for electric car batteries, China could pretty easily control a monopoly. This would be terrible for the US because the future of automobiles is electric and a large portion of the American economy is car manufacturing. This would also affect us because a large part of Canada’s economy is the US which effectively means that if they have less money to spend on our products we will sell less. Alongside economics, I also think this Innovation is great because of the unethical mining it will avoid. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has 70% of the world’s Cobalt Supply but the mining as I stated earlier in the Congo is not ethical and is filled with child labor. By initiating an alternative we  lift the pressure off of child labor mines in the Congo.

Tech article 3 – Aria Gen 2, Meta smart glasses

Back in 2020 meta released their first iteration of smart glasses, which unfortunately were only available for researchers. meta is doing this again with their new Aria Gen 2 smart glasses that are centered around AI features.  Meta has made improvements from their original design, like an improved lightweight frame and Advanced Eye tracking system that can detect blinks and estimate the center of pupils. Additionally the glasses contain a significantly improved microphone,  that according to meta is a game changer for audio and Loud environments. The glasses contain a total of five cameras, one for eye tracking, and four for CV, But still manage to not be exceptionally bulky and to only weigh around 70 grams.

My thoughts

My thoughts on this topic are that smart glasses would be very cool to have in everyday life, being able to watch movies well at the same time as having a conversation with someone you don’t feel like talking to, sounds amazing. As amazing as that sounds I would predict that in most scenarios similar to what I just described it would be perceived as impolite to wear the glasses and you would likely have to take them off. Aside from that, I think the glasses could be used in two main ways. First of all for directions, especially in foreign places where you don’t know where you’re going. The second thing I think they could be used for is translation. My mom works in Richmond hospital and she has told me that she often has to have a translator in the room for patients that don’t speak English. These glasses would quickly solve that problem by using its microphone and speakers to translate on both sides. Also in places like a hospital, the hospital could provide a second pair of glasses to the person that doesn’t speak English so the conversation can move back and forth. I think that that use would be utilized commonly so I think that making these glasses would be successful. Also they would be entertaining for the average consumer, who is just trying to have fun
